The Health Class
Because we had a registered nurse with us on this trip, we asked her if she’d be up for teaching a health and hygiene class as well as be available for anyone sick or with medical questions. Rachel is the best and she immediately said YES!
She and her daughter Hannah, who is currently in nursing school, came prepared with signs, medications, and all sorts of helpful information to share with our friends! And our wonderful Denise Pace translated which kept things moving along beautifully and without any communication issues. It was AMAZING to see how many of the community members came to learn. Overall we had 17 adults there, 16 of them mothers! Josiah and Shaun went door to door to remind people of the class and I think that really helped with attendance!
At AWB, we know that if we can educate the mothers, that information will trickle down to their children as they teach them and care for them and soon enough, their education will spread like wildfire throughout the village. These mothers had a lot of their plate that day but they wanted to be there to learn how to best help their children. It was beautiful to witness. It honestly had Sharla and I in tears. We were so happy that they came and that they are really starting to trust us. We were able to give each family that came a first aid kit. Thanks so much to Rachel, Hannah and Denise! The health class was an absolute hit!
