Que Guapas! The Teachers
The teachers here at the school house in Guatemala are truly amazing women!
Every day they come to work to teach these sweet young minds so many important things. On top of the already emotionally and mentally exhausting load that comes with their job, these women also have a tiring physical aspect included.
Since their toilets don’t have plumbing, the teachers have to carry buckets of water from the kitchen to the toilets (clear across the school yard) to help the students flush them after each use. (And they only just got running water to their kitchen last January!)
For their garbage, they throw everything into a “burn pile” (near the edge of the school yard) where, once it’s large enough, they can light it on fire. This means that on windy days, garbage is strewn across the schoolyard easily.
Before AWB was able to connect electricity into their kitchen and school house, they could only teach their students if there was adequate natural lighting, but that was still difficult due to the schools thick, brick walls.
Sometimes their students don’t come back to class and they aren’t sure why. Sometimes they need to teach children who haven’t eaten in awhile and have a hard time focusing because they are lacking the vital nutrients our bodies and brains need regularly. And despite all of the hardship, these amazing women keep showing up. Keep working hard. Keep loving and leading these children with their whole hearts! We want to be as diligent and hardworking as these Guapas!!
Below are some pictures of the teachers as well as the classrooms and school amenities. It’s come a long way but we can keep going with your help! :)

The burn pile is on the left, and the bathrooms that are currently being used are in the center, although they are not actually connected to any plumbing yet.
